What types of documents can I upload to Briefcase?
Last updated: April 9, 2026
Briefcase processes a range bookkeeping documents in common file formats. From your single upload point, our AI will review documents, triage them, and allocate them to the correct inbox.
Supported document types
Cost invoices
Sales invoices
Receipts
Credit notes
Bank statements
Supplier statements
Any other documents detected (e.g. non-transactional emails or general correspondence will be automatically archived)
Supported file types
PDF — .pdf
Images — .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .gif, .webp, .heic, .heif
Microsoft Word — .doc, .docx
Microsoft Excel — .xls, .xlsx
OpenDocument — .odt, .ods
Multi-Invoice PDFs
Upload a single PDF containing multiple invoices (up to 50 pages).
Briefcase automatically detects page breaks and splits the file into individual entries; the original multi-invoice PDF is archived.
Our AI will attempt to keep related documents within a individual invoice (e.g. delivery notes). If these are mistakenly archived, you can simply attach them to the invoice. See this guide for instructions on how.
Briefcase cannot split documents where multiple invoices / receipts are on the same page. Separate invoices must start on separate pages.
Upload limitations
PDFs
PDFs with more than 50 pages cannot be processed. Larger files should be split into smaller ones with maximum of 50 pages each.
Encrypted PDFs cannot be split or processed (system will skip document splitting).
Maximum file size
20MB per document (files exceeding this limit are automatically rejected).
Maximum line items
Briefcase supports multi-line invoice extraction up to 20 lines per invoice
Upload quality
Scanned documents with poor image quality and handwritten documents may have reduced accuracy.
